An ionic air purifier is a device that uses electrically charged plates to produce negative ions, which acts similarly to static electricity. Although numerous companies are selling ionic air purifiers, several studies have found these purifiers to be very ineffective in cleaning the air. Since these devices charge smoke and dust particles, these elements can easily become attracted to positive or neutrally charged surfaces. As a result, it could fall out of the air immediately.

In many countries, the use of ionic air purifiers became less popular and unaccepted in mainstream therapies. However, due to infections, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreaks and other diseases that can be transferred through the air, the popularity of these purifiers in different countries increased significantly. For instance, Japan has become interested in products with negative ions, such as washing machines and refrigerators, due to the fear of catching SARS.

Although some ionic air purifiers can provide health benefits for some people, most of the products are considered useless or even harmful in some circumstances. On the other hand, some studies suggest the positive effects of negative ions in air-conditioned environments as well as the importance of negative ions as alternatives for treating different conditions.

Issues Associated with Ionic Air Purifiers

Companies who sell ionic air purifiers have been criticized for several reasons. First, since the cleaning range of these devices is designed to treat only one room, it can be a costly and ineffective way of ensuring clean air for an entire house. Another criticism focuses on the effectiveness of these air purifiers. Since the airborne particles will eventually wind up on areas close to the device, the surface instantly becomes dirty. As a result, it reduces the efficiency of the device while using higher voltage.

Some companies who manufacture and sell ionic air purifiers claim unproven effects, such as the production of ionic wind and the generation of the ozone. While these effects may be appealing to many people, the claims of these companies have not been proven in any kind of study.

These ionic devices and ozone generators are usually confused with each other because they operate similarly. However, people should be aware that ionic air purifiers make use of “electro-statically” charged plates in producing both negatively and positively charged ions. Be aware that the FDA does not allow ozone or ionic therapies as medical alternatives because it could cause lung damage and other diseases.
